The DMV is shining bright once again. Drew Dave is the latest sound creator to rise from the Washington, DC area. His new instrumental effort SynthBASED is now available via Mello Music Group.

SynthBASED is a concept album. It’s a soul, kind of jazzy, with some electronic elements, kind of album, with the common denominator being that every single track utilizes a synth bass. The synth saw bass to be specific,” states Dave. “The title derives from that, with the ‘Based’ just being a play on “bass” and Lil B’s ‘Based God’ ideology.”

The production wizard’s earlier work appeared on projects by fellow DMV representative yU of Diamond District. But this 14-track project is a new direction for Dave.

“For me, this album has really been the first honest attempt, and definitely the beginning, of me really stepping outside of solely sampling,” Dave explains. “I played with melodies and incorporated live instrumentation and percussion. I played out every bass line, did some slight stuff on the keys, and laid subtle harmonies.”

While SynthBASED is clearly the Hip Hop board master’s musical baby, he did bring in other talented minds to assist with the collection. Emcees Kenn Starr and Cortez dropped vocals, Solar Heights producer Charlie Ross provided the drums on “Full Circle”, and Dave’s good friend Drew Kid added additional melodies and chords throughout the album.

“It was definitely me using my resources to make the album as complete as I could. From turning instrumentals from just beats, into actual compositions,” says Dave.
