Adolescence is the transitional period where a child develops into an adult. One of the most awkward, confusing, and enriching periods of life serves as theme for teenage rapper Fisher Kay’s latest work. Fisher’s Adolessons introduces a more brazen artist than the one presented on earlier projects like Weekends and Eugene Sanders. It’s clear, like the title suggests, the Fitchburg Phenom is learning to channel his sullen feelings toward his haters into competitive energy that is fueling his drive.
“People are always talking shit. Everyone swears they’re the nicest. But, that’s rap music for you,” says Fisher. “I’ve just grown up. I figured out how to turn my anger into good music. Well, I think it’s good at least. I’m just trying to be the best. I’m hungry.”
Adolessons is produced mostly by Fisher with longtime collaborator CHill tackling the beat for the song “Literal”. The 12-track mixtape features cuts that mostly fall under three minutes which the rapper attributes to his personal tendency of staying short and to the point.
Despite its quick running time, Fisher points out that he took his time crafting Adolessons. The Massachusetts resident conceived the direction of the mixtape well before he jumped behind a microphone to record the music.
“I really tried not to rush this project. I had fun with every song I made. I made sure it all came really natural,” explains Fisher. “I wanted to paint a good picture. I wanted to capture what I felt like the concept of Adolessons really and actually was to me. It’s like I knew how it was going to sound before it was finished.”
Up next for Fisher Kay’s Lame Kids Collective is Sogni by Azoh (who FK calls “the next big thing”). The crew is also planning to shoot several music videos and possibly setting up a cypher.
